Top fonts of 2010 : MyFonts.Com

MyFonts’ parade of most popular fonts of 2010 is based on sales, so ultimately this is the list that customers/designers voted for. And a fascinating collection it is too, offering striking, charming and highly original faces for all tastes and budgets. Some trends? “Friendly and human” is big, with typefaces sporting rounded corners, soft silhouettes or hand-drawn letterforms. Scripts are going as strong as ever. And two cities have risen to prominence as typographic metropoli, 7500 miles apart: Buenos Aires and Berlin.

Brandon Grotesque

Not only was Brandon Grotesque the most successful new sans serif of the year, it was also the best selling 2010 release overall. Designer Hannes von Döhren took a fresh look at the geometric modernist classics from early twentieth-century Germany. Giving Brandon long ascenders and descenders, he took his cues from the more stylish and decorative typefaces of that genre, such as Erbar or Kabel. Brandon Grotesque makes sensible use of the compass and ruler: the geometric shapes were optically corrected for better legibility and harmony. The rounded corners lend the typeface a softer look in large sizes.

Ad Verbatim II

Terence is a very dear friend and a fantastic advertising creative. ‘Ad Verbatim’ is a series by his visionary mind.

I see you’ve got your helmet on today. Hush, don’t worry I haven’t seen a thing. And you haven’t seen my ballerina pose either. I’m not into ultra-feminine oomph and no one’s trying to win a Thai beauty pageant. I’m just straddling the fine line of a creative dilemma and that thing on my head is a grecian sword. I know it’s made in China, but so’s your helmet. How else would you deal with a brief that is a. non-existent and b. evolving ?

They tell you what they want from the noncommittal armchair and then change what they didn’t tell you when you do respond. C’est la vie ? Vie sucks. And mine’s a leech larger than life with a pharynx parched enough to paraphrase Coca-Cola.

This week in advertising

We picked up an issue of India Today and scanned through the REAL ADS. The ads that get printed, released, that consumers see, not awards jury. We really liked those by Dove (O&M), Essar (O&M), and somewhat liked Singapore (unknown), Thomas Cook (unknown). It seems Ogilvy is still the only agency concentrating on creative. Good Creative.

(We deliberately left the MS Cloud ad by Wunderman torn, because we hate the front cover flip ads. Just HATE them. They screw our magazine reading pleasure)
