Why are you an Illustrator?
Illustrations can be happy, dark, beautiful or cruel. Some of them send a message or ask you questions. I feel illustrations have a beautiful way of communicating our thoughts. It is my way of expressing to the world.

You have a distinct style of illustration. How long did it take for you to develop your style?
It took me few years to develop this style. I started by simplifying complex organic forms into simple basic shapes. This helped me in understanding forms and shapes especially of animals. Slowly I started learning and studying more about animal behavior, patterns, color, texture, etc.
Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
My sister is my biggest role model and inspiration. She is a landscape architect and is a tree lover. So she gives me lots of knowledge on animals, birds, insects and nature.

There is one anonymous person. That person believed in me, pushed me, criticized me and helped me a lot in these past 5-6 years and I am lucky and grateful for that.
What made you decide to become a freelance illustrator? When did you start freelancing? Do you illustrate for advertising?
I started freelancing soon after graduating. Freelancing helps you in taking decisions and handling clients personally which is very important. I am very choosy when it comes to freelance, hence do not freelance much unless I get full liberty to illustrate what I want.
Are many advertising agencies getting illustrations made these days? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?
I think it depends on the content and requirement. Currently I am working as a full time Designer for Chumbak.

You have such a wide experience as a top working professional. What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on Illustration as a career option? Is it paying well enough?
There are very few companies in India that allow you creative freedom in illustration. It is very competitive and sometimes you end up getting paid less than what you’d expect for the hard work that goes in.
For me illustration is more of a passion and comes from within. So if you are passionate and love illustrating then you should not worry about the rest. Always carry a sketchbook around as you may never know what you see might inspire you. Every day is a new adventure.
