Shreya Mujumdar : In Conversation With An Illustrator / Graphic Designer

Shreya Mujumdar is a communication designer navigating her way through different disciplines, focusing on illustration at the moment. Professionally delving in visual merchandising, she finds joy in watching animated movies and learning about different cultures.

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
I have always been interested in art and design from a young age and knew I wanted to do something in the creative fields for sure. Graphic design serves as an outlet to my ideas and helps give a visual identity to my thoughts. In some ways, my work is an extension of my personality.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
I am currently a final year student at the National Institute of Fashion Technology pursuing B.Des in fashion communication.

You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
My approach towards design depends a lot on the brief/requirements of the task at hand. As a designer, it is important to first consider the purpose of design. Once that has been established, I try ways in which I can incorporate my sense of style into the work. There is a certain aesthetic that I lean towards, either clean & simple or an illustrative approach. As I began working on different projects, my style kept developing on its own. Its been 3 and a half years of academically pursuing design which has brought my design where it is today.

Harry Goswami : In A Chat With A Creative Director

Harihar Goswami is a creative professional oscillating between BTL and ATL campaigns for brands across the corporate spectrum. Currently working as a Creative Director at QED Communications, he transcends between the roles of a Copywriter, Director and Creative Director with ease and an ‘occasional’ lack of punctuality.

I’m a bag of mixed popcorn – an advertiser for the butter, a poet for the cheese and a filmmaker for the salt! People around me will tell you that I’m someone who thinks everybody else is wrong and only I am right. They are wrong.
Politically opinionated, emotionally driven, humorously grumpy and chaotically organized – I could go on and on but eventually my list of catchphrases will run out and I still would not know how to describe myself.

Why are you into advertising?
Well, it’s the closest you can get to becoming an artist without actually being paid like one. Atleast that’s how it started for sure!

Did you attend school for fine art or communications?
Filmmaking has been my dream from the beginning, and that’s how I ended up joining a communications institute in Delhi. Studied for a year, realized filmmaking or as a matter of fact – any form of creative expression cannot be taught – and decided to drop out!

How do awards impact your career as an advertising creative?
Personally, I could not care less, as I don’t think awards in advertising make sense. We are driven by client needs and our job is to do what’s best for the brand – and that more often than not, is not the most creative! If anything, awards should be decided by a spike in product sales!

Sayan Mandal : Graphic Designer, Illustrator

Sayan Mondal is a Kolkata based-creative freak-eccentric guy and a self-claimed graphic designer and digital illustrator. He is passionate enough in art and design and voices out his words through them along with the value-adding mechanism to mankind. In spite of scoring 88% in his board exam with the science stream, he did not pursue any other traditional career option rather moved ahead with his inner calling and chose Graphic Design. Though he did not attend any traditional design school, with the constant effort of self-learning and practicing hard he has acquired the skills of graphic designing and illustration. He loves to be around positive people, creative individuals and empowers others.

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
The Paramount purpose of a communication system is to deliver a meaningful message. Graphic design plays a powerful role in visual communication. Since my childhood, I have always felt an inclination towards observing things, looking at them hours and hours, maybe trying to have words with them. I feel they have their own words no matter they would be animated or non-animated. I’ve always searched for a medium to establish my observations and convey those obscured messages out of them which might add value to mankind. I feel, design especially graphic design and illustration give me the freedom and comfort to ventilate my pent up emotion, those imaginary messages and shape them the way I want. And an unavoidable passion for graphics has always driven me to stick to it and explore more.

It has always been fascinating to see how each brush stroke changes a painting completely. Design became more fascinating than painting, because now I could ‘paint’ with more than just a brush.

Yes, I completed my graduation in Graphic Design from MIT Institute of Design, Pune. It’s where I built my foundation and explored my own design identity.
