Shouvik Tarafder : In Conversation With An Advertising Creative

A seasoned wordsmith, Shouvik has spent a decade wandering in the world of Advertising & Marketing. Prolonged exposure to the madness has left him referring to himself in the third person.
Along the way, he has made friends with Burger King, Hersheys, Nestle, Bloomberg Quint, Times of India, Goodknight, Vodafone etc. He has also channelized his love for movies into movie channels like Movies Now, Romedy Now, MNX & MN+, spearheading their creative mandates in the process.
In terms of accolades, he has bagged a few Kyoorius Elephants as well as Spikes Asia award. He also came very close to winning a Nobel Prize, but then the alarm rang!
When he is not being chased by deadlines, Shouvik likes to Netflix & Chai. Once a vociferous reader, he now only has casual flings with books on weekends. His love for world cinema often takes him down rabbit holes, as he enjoys reading up about movies almost as much as watching them.

Why are you into Advertising?
To tell stories. Every brief is an opportunity to do so. Whether it’s through a TVC, a billboard or even over Instagram stories. The mediums are constantly evolving but the crux of it all still remains the same. Tell timeless tales in the shortest time possible.
Also, there’s no other job that pays you to stare at a wall during working hours.

Did you attend school for fine art or design or Communications?
I did my Bachelor’s in Media Science from NSHM School of Media Communication in Calcutta. Ours was the second ever batch. So one might say we collectively took a leap of faith. And it paid off.
The fun part however, was going back to college later on as the copywriter leading the account for my agency. From brochures to ad campaigns, I did it all for my college.

Why are you an Illustrator?
I am a graphic designer, who likes to illustrate a lot. I have always been inclined towards art since I was a kid. I like the fact that how one idea can be brought on a paper and it helps clients to communicate things to their audience, it’s the creative process I am in love with.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
I did my Bachelors in Visual Arts and a certificate course in graphic designing.

Tell us something about your colouring book for adults ‘Colouring It Loud’ What made you create it?
The pandemic bite brought me a new perspective on life and art. Months of lockdown and isolation made me grow distant and cold towards my art as well as my work, leaving me clueless about what to draw next. The inspiration and insights I would get from everyday life, from the strange smiles in the crowd, the mountains and the music- all that was gone.
After months of contemplation and multiple monologues about why I loved art in the first place, I decided to start afresh and Colouring Out Loud was born! An illustration book that’s not only aimed at helping other people sort their feelings and frustrations through art but also helped me personally get through my own rut. It helped me get back to my original feelings about art as a therapeutic medium of self-expression.

Vrinda Varnekar : In Conveersation With An Advertising Creative

Vrinda is a 20-something writer from Pune, who loves her hometown but secretly loves Mumbai more. She also loves dogs, windy days, K3G, and is allergic to lactose, lies, and misogyny.

Why are you into Advertising?
It’s funny, but when I was a child I often found myself thinking of alternate endings to TVCs, or making up print ads in my personal diary. I find advertising to be a very thrilling blend of creativity, understanding of culture and human psychology, and of course, the power it has to make or break a brand. I have been a journalist for 3 years, dabbled in travel writing and content writing, but I find advertising to be the craziest, most amazing ride I’ve been on. It’s been 5 years, and I only love it more and more by the day!

Did you attend school for fine art or design or Communications?
I studied in Ahmedabad for my post grad- I studied creative communications at MICA.

Why are you into Advertising?
I was always fascinated by the world of advertising. Being a 90’s kid I grew up watching ads on TV. Till date I remember so many ads, their jingles, the slogans and the taglines. And when I realized that I can be an artist as well as a creative in the field of advertising, I jumped at the idea of it. The best part of advertising is no matter how crazy your thoughts or ideas are, there will always be somebody who will appreciate it.

Did you attend school for fine art or design or Communications?
I went to the College of Art, Delhi where I did Bachelors of Fine arts in Applied arts.

A little about yourself:

I am a Visual Communication Designer based in Delhi, India and a Co-founder of LSD, Learn Something Different. LSD is a platform where one nurtures the inner creative hidden inside each one of us and is a space where all aspects of creativity come together to celebrate the diversity in articulation and expression. Also, I am an ardent adorer of all animals, a budding sculptor who likes creating funky ceramic masks and has a second degree black belt in karate!

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
It has always been quite intriguing what emotions and thoughts the first cave painter’s prehistoric art piece evoked in the people around her/him/them. It is absolutely mind blowing the infinite range of emotions graphics can evoke in humans and animals. There is just something art does that words can’t convey. Like Edward Hopper once said, “If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.”

Graphic Design quite literally means visual communication. All designers and artists are the bridges between thoughts and words. To be able to design the perfect visuals to translate the client’s thoughts into the vivid words they want to convey is the creative process that excites me the most and which is why I chose the path of a Graphic Designer.

Madhura Chakravarty: In A Chat With An Advertising Creative

Balancer of work & life. Solo traveller. Team player.

Madhura Chakravarty is presently the Associate Creative Director of Monkey Wrench Communications in Kolkata. After a stint at Ogilvy & Mather in Delhi & Kolkata, Madhura realised she’s cut out for a hot-shop that is disciplined to create effective communication even on business cards. After working with brands like Vodafone, Greenply, ITC, Linc Pens, Polar Fans & more, she’s currently aiming to adapt the concept of ‘ikigai’ in life.

Why are you into Advertising?
Honestly, I enjoy the format of advertising which is largely story-telling for me first and then of course followed by brand building. Who doesn’t remember good stories? We remember our exchanges with co-riders, churan-wallahs and our grandmothers in greater detail than our lectures. An engaging narrative is certainly more memorable than a brand’s product window. It helps humanize a brand’s voice while building personality.

Advertising has the allowance of people from diverse backgrounds to arrive at a single platform and work towards a big idea – guitarists, CA professionals, professors, theatre artists – thus empowering the birth of a compelling story together.

I was very clear about being a copywriter after a group project in communication school demanded each of us to write a script on selling dark chocolate. The innumerable ways of selling chocolate to a teenager from 90 odd minds was a fascinating experience that went on to prove the collective power of many minds!

Madhumita Chaudhury : In A Chat With An Advertising Creative

With around 12 years of experience in advertising, Madhumita says she’s only just begun. Utterly full of energy, Madhumita is passionate about life – wanting to devour every experience in all its depth and taste all that life to offer. She loves travelling but is equally happy doing that mentally with a voluminous book in her hand. She is quite comfortable taking up challenges, skydiving included, and that reflects in her work, life and choices. She would like not to be put in a box!

We are all more alike than we know. So the lesser I say the better!

Why are you into Advertising?
I stumbled into it, and isn’t that how most people get into advertising? In some professions like this, a big part of the reward is the work itself, like when you have a great idea. The satisfaction is tremendous. Of course, the unique challenges in advertising make it even more interesting, like your art partner always, diligently, typing out the copy you mailed him on the layout instead of copy-pasting it, and sending it to the boss, or worse the client, before letting you copy check! But beyond that, I find it a rewarding career, and as with everything else, perseverance and commitment pays.

Did you attend school for fine art or design or Communications?
No such luck. I nurtured my mind with a BA English Honours. And then ruined it all with an MBA [kidding].

TAG Award 2019 – Illustrator of the year 2019 (Packaging Design, Illustration & Branding Identity Design)

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
Creativity is fulfilling. Graphic design is something that you can have a Real Passion for &can give you a real sense of satisfaction. As well as picking colors and choosing only designs, they have to think ‘Outside the box’. And it is always said that ‘Follow your passion & success will follow you’ and it was my passion. Graphic Design makes feel that creativity is not just thinking it is about the work you are willing to do (drawing). Graphic Design gives you a opportunity to bring your ideas to life! Good design is about so much more, than just making things look nice it’s a very thoughtful, challenging profession and I loved graphic designs so much that I was prepared to take up the challenge the whole of my life! Design associated with solving problems and making the problems a best solution for others. And so I am a graphic designer.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Yes, I attended a school (college) for fine art/design : BKPS & Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune .

You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
Actually I started my drawings from when I was in college (1st yr). I realized that I loved designs from when I was a young lad. I was passionate about the way designers / artists think ,the creativity they express in their drawings. Even I had a desire to do this, and I did it! I achieved what I want. Now about the style. I took complete 15 years to develop my own style,(patterns designs colors) still I think how can explore more styles in sketching, drawing, advertising etc. Draw everyday, get inspired by people you admire, try to emulate them, their style. This is how I got to know or I discovered my own style of drawing and sketching, designing.

How did you focus so much on graphic illustrations ?When did you realize you loved doing it and wanted more of it?
Many of my seniors used to draw when I was doing my 1st year of applied arts. I thought even my drawing is very nice, I should also achieve a ideal platform drawings. I thought I needed to explore my hidden talent of drawing and while deciding my career you have to be very relevant. So I used to observe the drawings of my elders & of my teachers. Then I decided to only focus on graphic illustrations, I practiced a lot of sketches, I determined focusing on different essence of illustrations, children’s illustrations, concept illustrations & thinking continuously of these things made me keep my focus constantly on graphic design. As I told that I used to emulate some of the drawings of my elders, as soon as I used to do it a objective flashed in my mind. That “I can also do this” to improvise my drawing illustrations. I only ‘practised’ a lot of sketches, drawings. And one day in my life came like a blossomed flower. I realized that my sketches are turning out to be really virtuous, and really nice! I started loving it. I wanted to do more of it, I was excited for each & every challenge. I took a survey of many artists, and decided to set up my career and my life was made for my drawings!
