Amrit Pal Singh : Graphic Designer

Why are you a Graphic/Brand Designer?
Since I used Microsoft Paint and created cartoons for the school magazine, I have been sure about pursuing graphic design. I absolutely love the field of design and I sincerely believe I have the best job in the world.
Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Oh yes, I was trained by the fine Jedi Masters at Vancouver Film School. I enrolled in Digital Design Program because I loved each and every class they had to offer.

You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
A distinct style comes from taste and constantly working on projects you really want to work on. It has been in the making ever since I entered the field so around 8 years.

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
Superman, Batman, Walt Disney and later on Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Steve Jobs, Paula Scher, Jessica Hische, David Carson, Sagmeister & Walsh.
Who was the most influential personality on your career in graphic design?
My instructors at VFS played a big role, my father and all my role models mentioned above some of whom I had the opportunity to meet in person.

When did you start freelancing?
When I was in High School.

Was there any time when you wanted to quit graphic/brand design?
Never.

Are many advertising agencies hiring graphic designers? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?
I work directly work with clients and publishers although I don’t mind working for agencies ( the good ones).

Do you have clients who give you steady work or do you advertise for new clients often?
I don’t advertise at all, just keep my website updated and be socially active. Mainly I get clients from my website and networks like Behance and Dribbble.

Any other Indian graphic/brand designers who you admire?
In terms of indian role model there is a famous filmmaker who started as a graphic designer and went on to be a legend, Satyajit Ray.

When it comes to contemporary people I admire Raghava KK.

What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on graphic design as a career option?
Absolutely I Do, UI / UX designers are in crazy demand and very well paid. If you like branding or illustration then also this the best time to be a designer. Indian market is finally beginning to understand importance of design and field has grown tremendously in last few years.

Do you think Clients are opening up to keeping aside a decent respectable budget for design work? Do you think clients are understanding that they need to invest in Design as a communication tool and also to cut the clutter, and that good design comes at a price?
India embracing the Startup culture has led to awareness of importance of design. They know if they want to compete at a global level they need to invest in design like others do globally. Its a start in that direction and I hope it keeps going that way.

What’s on your iPod?
Classic Rock (Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Cream..) , A R Rehman and Coke Studio.
