Shreya Mujumdar : In Conversation With An Illustrator / Graphic Designer

Shreya Mujumdar is a communication designer navigating her way through different disciplines, focusing on illustration at the moment. Professionally delving in visual merchandising, she finds joy in watching animated movies and learning about different cultures.

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
I have always been interested in art and design from a young age and knew I wanted to do something in the creative fields for sure. Graphic design serves as an outlet to my ideas and helps give a visual identity to my thoughts. In some ways, my work is an extension of my personality.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
I am currently a final year student at the National Institute of Fashion Technology pursuing B.Des in fashion communication.

You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
My approach towards design depends a lot on the brief/requirements of the task at hand. As a designer, it is important to first consider the purpose of design. Once that has been established, I try ways in which I can incorporate my sense of style into the work. There is a certain aesthetic that I lean towards, either clean & simple or an illustrative approach. As I began working on different projects, my style kept developing on its own. Its been 3 and a half years of academically pursuing design which has brought my design where it is today.

Advert title: TMI – Talk about Menstruation In the open
Advert Type: Integrated
Advertising School: Miami Ad School, Mumbai, India
Art Director: Saloni Doshi
Copywriters: Palak Kapadia, Yashashree Samant, Nagma Dhingra

Synopsis: Talking about menstruation is largely a social and cultural taboo. McKinsey in partnership with The Case For Her wants to tackle issues and social stigmas around menstruation. Women themselves have internalised the stigma related to menstruation to the extent that they refrain from talking about it openly and certainly not in detail. Normally women are extremely particular about nuances in colours. However, when it comes to periods, women refrain from talking about the different shades of menstrual blood. Research shows that a change in colour can be an early indicator of underlying health issues – a conversation we shouldn’t be shying away from. In order to execute the same we use various touch points that women encounter and talk about anyway, to normalise the “uncomfortable” period conversation.

Saloni Ramteke : Graphic Design

Saloni Ramteke, 20, is an illustrator based in Mumbai. Her love for drawing put her on a path to study animation and eventually take up illustration. She enjoys watching anime, working out and playing on her Nintendo DS.

Why are you an Illustrator?
I don’t know how to express this better than just saying that I love to draw.
I was going to do medicine but realized at the last moment that it wasn’t for me and decided to do what I was truly passionate about which was animation.
Having studied it for the past three years, I realized that my interests mainly lie in illustration and pre production work and hence, decided to stick to that.
