Apeksha Gupta : Graphic Design

Apeksha has conceptualized and executed projects for prominent brands across different industries. Her heart lies in branding and identity, illustrations and typography. She loves to experiment with different medias. Design takes her to another world, another place all together. Dog Lover. Divergent. Imaginative.

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
I think I have always had a strange attraction towards art, drawing, colors and paints. It has been more than an interest since I was a kid! Also, I think it gives me pleasure to fix what I feel needs to be, be it a TV remote that’s not working or a ‘not so happy’ person’s mood! I like listening to people and helping them out in any way that I can! And I think I can do both by being a Graphic Designer!

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Planned on fine arts, finally Joined IILM School of Design!

You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
Time? No idea! It is something that just comes from within; somehow all the work that I have done till now has bits and pieces of me attached. Very unintentionally!

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
My parents and my sister! They continue to be my role models in someway or the other!

Who was the most influential personality on your career in graphic design?
Mrs. Sumir Narasimhan! One of the professors at my design school. Had it not been her ready to answer the stupidest of all questions that I would ask, I wouldn’t be doing what I am today. She has always been that one ‘go to’ person since then.

When did you start freelancing?
When I was 19!

Was there any time when you wanted to quit graphic design?
Never! That would be like quitting my life.

Are many advertising agencies hiring graphic designers? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?
If you are good at what you do, agencies are always hiring! I don’t mind working anywhere till the time I get to do the kind of work that feeds my hunger of creating good work.

Do you have clients who give you steady work or do you advertise for new clients often?
Both. I have a few clients with whom I have been working for a long time now, while I’ve also always been open to new projects and kinds of work.

Any other Indian graphic designers who you admire?
Nasheet Shadani. He is taking design and advertising to a whole new level in India.

What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on graphic design as a career option?
Don’t take it up just because the soaring cut off for the other ‘mainstream’ subjects has left you with no other choice. Be ready to work late nights/early mornings/ sunny afternoons – basically most of the time! Take it up only if you are serious about design; only if you would call it more than your passion. And oh, If you don’t mix it up with fashion design!

Do you think Clients are opening up to keeping aside a decent respectable budget for design work? Do you think clients are understanding that they need to invest in Design as a communication tool and also to cut the clutter, and that good design comes at a price?
When it comes to money v/s design, India still has a long way to go. If you talk of the mindset that people in our country have, sitting in front of the screen and creating a logo should be a matter of few minutes as it doesn’t include a lot physical energy, they believe.
Not a lot of people treat it as a communication ‘tool’ but as an aesthetic appeal!
But then you have exceptions everywhere; sometimes you come across people who actually appreciate and understand design which is always a good feeling!

Mac or PC?
Mac! Mac! Mac!

Who would you like to take out for dinner?
My DAD! He hates to go out for dinners! Haha! It has been on my bucket list for quite some time now!

What’s on your iPod?
Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Snow Patrol – Ruling my playlist all the time!

What’s your Twitter Handle?
Not a huge fan of twitter! But I’ve since forever been super active on my insta profiles,
@rightbrained_ and @atypetale
