Cards For Sexuality : Miami Ad School

Problem : In society’s sexual conversation, it often seems like men do most of the talking.

Insight : For some reason, there are silly stigmas associated with sex stuff from a young woman’s point of view.

Solution : Cards Against Humanity is a great way to break the ice. What if they released a new stand-alone pack to empower women, and subsequently all genders, with a game that breaks the ice on sex talk and lets females hold the cards of the sexual conversation.

Why did you become a designer?
I don’t think there was one big pivotal moment. My eary childhood memories are around losing myself to drawing, taking my ficticious dog for a walk and acting in a lot of plays. I knew that my career would be in the arts very early on. It’s what came naturally.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
I attended The Pratt Institute for Communication Design.

Jugmug Thela : An Excellent Creative Branding Excercise

Jugmug Thela is our attempt at fusing the atmosphere for street side chai shops with choice, hygiene and quality of beverages served in airconditioned upscale chai/coffee shops. That said, we are more street side café than we are a coffee shop, since most of our menu is of beverages that are prepared authentically in manner they would be prepared on streets/small cafes of the country of their origin.

How did you conceive of the idea for Jugmug Thela?
It wasn’t so much conceived of, as it was a response to the need for one. Whenever you go out to public gatherings and events such as concerts, conferences, events etc, – you may get decent food – but the chai – coffee are always given no attention. If you are anything like me, you’d rather not drink vending machine coffee and tea-bag tea.

We like the brand building on Jugmug. Do you also work on brand building and corporate identities for other clients?
Thanks, we’re glad you it! My design career over the years has evolved into the role of Brand Strategist, so I would assume that understanding naturally seeped into Jugmug Thela. That said, we didn’t really have a brand plan when we started. We just put it out there without too much consideration on that front, and the aesthetic just evolved organically from what we did.

I’ve worked on several big ticket brands, but at Jamura Design Lab we’re not accepting any new clients. We’re moving our focus from a being a service company to a more independent self-initiated projects format.

Mira Malhotra, Studio Kohl

1

Mira Malhotra is a Mumbai-based graphic designer, visual artist and founder of design house Studio Kohl. Her personal work tends more to image-making and illustration. Having been exposed to a variety of cultures as a child her work is oftentimes an amalgamation of what it is like to be Indian with what it is to look upon Indianness as an outsider. Colourful, humorous, charming and witty, it stems from her fascination with the decorative items at local bazaars, Indian history or from indigenous arts and crafts.

Why are you an Illustrator?
I love image, and I love ‘drawn’ images. I think it’s mainly because drawing can be unhinged from reality, so what cannot be represented in a photograph or even be conveyed via photorealism can be conveyed via drawing, which can be simplified and broken down, or made complex, at the artist’s/illustrator’s will. This ability that only illustration has, makes me fascinated with it and prompted me to dabble in illustration.

Is Trip Creative primarily an illustration and design company? Do you also work on brand building and corporate identities?
Trip is not just about any single medium like illustration or graphic design. We have a more holistic approach to projects and work towards finding a creative design solution, using whichever medium, that is best suited to the project- be it film or animation or illustration or in rare cases the need of strategy rather than creating another campaign.
Yes, we do work on brands and corporate identities. We also provide video, digital and on ground solutions as well.

Tell us about your designers. Did they go into fine art or design schools? How do you pick them up?
We’re always on the lookout for this inherent ‘keeda’ in our crew, something unique or new that each one brings to the table. Yes, most of our designers did go to design school but it really doesn’t matter where they come from as long as they have that creative mindset which they’re willing and able to apply to any given spectrum.
