Shivani Singh : UX, Graphic Design and Illustration

When not trying to meet deadlines, you’ll find Shivani being too competitive at a game of scrabble, singing something corny on her ukulele, scribbling on clean surfaces with posca markers or falling under the spell of Netflix. Her less useful skills include reciting the alphabet backwards and doing a perfect somersault underwater. 

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
It’s an attempt to bridge the gap between what I want to say and what people hear.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Yes. National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
I don’t think I have a style, but I am told I can’t do serious.

How did you focus so much on typography? When did you realise you loved doing it and wanted more of it?
Language interests me to no end, and I think that’s where the love for typography comes from. I realised it in my early high school days

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
Still growing up, so, to name a few, I always find a way to translate inspiration from the works of Alan Fletcher, Michael Bierut, Maira Kalman, Grant Snider, Jean Jullien, Zoya Akhtar. I’m basically drawn towards people who take their craft seriously but not themselves.

Who was the most influential personality on your career in graphic design?
Alan Fletcher.

When did you start freelancing?
I’ve always freelanced alongside my job, ever since third year of college, perhaps.

Was there any time when you wanted to quit graphic design?
Hahaha, never.

Are many advertising agencies hiring graphic designers? Do you work more with agencies or publishers or direct clients?
Many advertising agencies always hiring graphic designers and not paying them quite enough. I work with clients directly when freelancing.

Do you have clients who give you steady work or do you advertise for new clients often?
I don’t think this question applies, because I work full-time as a UX designer.

What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on graphic design as a career option?
Yes. take it up if the effort itself is pleasurable, and not just the applause.

Do you think Clients are opening up to keeping aside a decent respectable budget for design work? Do you think clients are understanding that they need to invest in Design as a communication tool and also to cut the clutter, and that good design comes at a price?
Yes, definitely, what a great time to be a designer.
