Sonali Zohra : Dangercat : Art and Graphic Design

Sonali is an illustrator, photographer and graphic designer based in Bangalore. She goes by the alias; Dangercat.

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
I was inclined to the arts from a very early age. As an only child, drawing was something I did to keep my mind occupied. I kept journals where I would document what I learnt in school, wrote down lyrics of songs I was listening to, even made detailed accounts of school trips through photography and drawing. I added leaves and feathers and other things along the way to the pages and soon found myself focusing on the layout of the page itself. I remember enjoying drawing, painting, writing, taking photographs and filling up those pages so much; I didn’t ever want to do anything else.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
Yes I did, College of fine arts Bangalore. It wasn’t the best of courses, but it did give me a lot of time to wander off and explore different mediums, I went on to study photography at Light and Life Academy in Ooty.

Sudeepti Tucker : Graphic Design

Sudeepti Tucker is a Delhi based Graphic Designer and Illustrator, and a recent graduate from the National Institute of Design. Her work is a lively mix of visual styles and themes that jump across music, mythology, nature and the mind. She finds herself happiest while lost in details.

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
When you’re small and parents push you to learn a whole bunch of different things, the only one I found myself eager about was art. It was much later that I was exposed to design as a professional pursuit and things fell into place. Design is largely about problem solving and visual design, while immediately suggests surface level engagement, is a much broader discipline. I suppose to sum it up, I’m a Graphic Designer because I enjoy using artistic tools in a deliberate creative manner to solve problems and communicate.

Mira Malhotra, Studio Kohl

1

Mira Malhotra is a Mumbai-based graphic designer, visual artist and founder of design house Studio Kohl. Her personal work tends more to image-making and illustration. Having been exposed to a variety of cultures as a child her work is oftentimes an amalgamation of what it is like to be Indian with what it is to look upon Indianness as an outsider. Colourful, humorous, charming and witty, it stems from her fascination with the decorative items at local bazaars, Indian history or from indigenous arts and crafts.

Why are you an Illustrator?
I love image, and I love ‘drawn’ images. I think it’s mainly because drawing can be unhinged from reality, so what cannot be represented in a photograph or even be conveyed via photorealism can be conveyed via drawing, which can be simplified and broken down, or made complex, at the artist’s/illustrator’s will. This ability that only illustration has, makes me fascinated with it and prompted me to dabble in illustration.
