Is it better to be cynical or jaded?

I believe both the terms “cynical” and “jaded” carry overtones of negativity - the former oppressive (read bastard) and the latter of a victim. Would one comfortably choose to be associated with either? Even if one did I’d more often than not, doubt the sincerity of the choice.
Cynicism to me is that which triggers the “oh, really?” reaction. The degree of cynicism is evident in the way we’d say it - be it with a snicker in the confines of our minds or audibly... dripping with sarcasm and outright condescension. It is an active provocative stance that outlines ones disbelief.
The term ‘jaded’ on the other hand, is associated with the nonchalance that follows fatigue in the face of an overwhelming reality. The reaction to the external stimuli is apathetic and passive. I see this state being best reflected when we go “so?”, shrug or simply don’t give enough of a shit to react.
I think our perception of both terms are experiential and thus relative.
But if cynicism reflects a belief that human conduct is motivated primarily by self-interest... I believe that’s realism. And even if realism gets us nowhere, at least we know where nowhere is.
Cynicism is better as long I know that my right to swing my disbelieving arm ends where the blackheads on your nose begin.

who wants
who wants to be "boring", if jaded means that? who wants to be "cynical", if it means being pessimistic and finding fault with anything and everything? i don't think normal humans love either of these types. interestingly, neither of these types would tolerate or get along with their own types.

Manav, dont you think 'balanced' would be boring? Imagine if Jim Morisson were 'balanced'? Would he be interesting OR admirable? Or for that matter Charlie Chaplin? Do we understand the correct meaning of Cynical at all? Does it necessarily need to have pessimistic connotations? Would you call Bhagat Singh's opinion of the british raj cynical? Then would you call a contemporary opinion of the present establishment cynical?

and i agree with u encyclomedia that cynical need not necessarily be negative.
a scientist should be cynical about his own results and try to poke holes in his own arguments in order to make it perfect.
the cynical person makes the more interesting character in a movie.
cynicism is a form of conviction. and it's better to be convinced about something at least instead of being what people are today - unconvinced about even themselves. in cynicism, i guess the conviction lies in believing that nothing is perfect and that would make a cynic strive for perfection. not a bad thing to do at all.
i think cynicism is a movement. that, through unpleasant means, strives towards value addition. something like bitter medicine that heals.
