LOS ANGELES In the wake of its global win of Nokia mobile phones on Monday, independent Wieden + Kennedy is opening an office in Delhi, India, according to Dave Luhr, the shop's global COO.
Luhr said today that although the Nokia account would be run out of the agency's London outpost, Wieden's presence in China and its upcoming Indian office were "an important part of our pitch. Because of the importance of the market today and in the future, this is a great opportunity for us."
The Dehli office would be built up as all previous Wieden satellites, using a mix of personnel from inside and outside the network. Luhr said the office would have about 20 people to start, with a full-service offering, including digital and creative departments, by the end of the year.
The office could also potentially service many of Wieden's other clients such as Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Starbucks and Nike, Luhr said. "We haven't talked to them about it yet. Our first priority is servicing Nokia there."
Luhr said he believes that the agency is the first American independent in India.
"The great thing about India is that although it is an emerging market, there's lots of creativity in the marketplace and a strong marketing presence internationally," Luhr said. "I really helps round out our network. Clients like Nokia and Visa see the same thing, that they can get the strength of Wieden creative with an infrastructure that goes around the world "
The Portland, Ore.-based agency also has offices in New York, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing
