A WORD OF CAUTION, FOR DESI CANNES WINNERS

Post by Krish »

Hiya,

So many Cannes winner from India this year, wow. But here's a note of advice for some of you youngsters.

I met a desi at Cannes who had an amazingly successful year this year, he got gold in practically every single festival with just one piece of work. While the work is great, it is a patli galli and he knows it too. I am not discounting his talent but I was surprised at his arrogaance.

Winning is great as far as it doesn't get to the head. Also look at what category u win in. This particular guy wants to work in Fallon, Mother etc. and thinks grass is greener on the other side.

Now consider this. You get a job at Fallon London, as they obviosly are charmed by a gold you won for some flower shop. Then they throw you as the lead on a global pitch for sony. Do you understand strategy? Can you lead people? Can you sell your work to people like David Lubars? Do you understand the Honda Dreams spot or even those quirky 118-118 spots? And guess what, suddenly the work will not be as good, and if you lose pitch you may lose the job.

Here's another scenario. With all your golds you may still have an ECD to report to who is an old gora fart. Try fighting racism. And with constant work pressure, politics and trying to adjust to a new country you not get time to do your patli gallis.

People talk about Pushy a lot here. After winning Cannes gold, the biggest mistake he made was quitting Piyush. Now i haven't heard of him. On the other hand if you are smart like Sonal Dabral you could really reach the top. I would stick within SE Asia.

I think the downside of winning cannes for youngsters is that you start having unreal opinion of yourself.

When CP+B is winning they win on real work, their grand prix etc are all real work...however when we win mostly it is work which even the guy on my next desk has not seen. That is dangerous. How can these guys survive on real jobs when they are working at CP+B on real clients like Burger King. There you just can not do a clever visual ad without thinking of the overall strategy.
