World Book Illustration Contest 2014

Post by Saumya »

The Folio Society and House of Illustration are delighted to announce the launch of The Book Illustration Competition 2014.

Now in its fourth year, this exciting collaboration between House of Illustration and The Folio Society aims to champion the art of book illustration and in 2013 received over 500 entries from across the globe.

The book to be illustrated this year is Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. You may read any edition of the work. To enter the competition you will need to submit three illustrations (any three scenes from the book) and a binding design.

Your illustrations can either bleed off the page or be surrounded by a white border for a trimmed page size of 222 x 144 mm. If your illustrations bleed (fill the entire page) please ensure the size is 228 x 150 mm which includes an extra 3 mm all around that will be trimmed off when the book is produced.

The binding design can be from any scene in the book or inspired by its overall tone and themes. The binding does not need to be finished artwork, although the three illustrations do.

You can use any medium that is suitable for reproduction. Illustrations may be in colour or black and white. All images must be portrait. Only one entry per person is allowed.

Entry fee is is £25 (approx. 40 USD). There is a reduced fee of £15 (approx. 24 USD) for students.

Eligibility

This annual international competition is open to illustrators from all over the world over the age of 18, both student and professional.

Prize

The winning entry, judged by a panel of experts, will become a commission worth £5,000 (approx. 8,000 USD) to complete a total of 9 illustrations and a binding design for Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. This will be published by The Folio Society in September 2014.

Five runners up will each receive a prize of £500 (approx. 800 USD), and three prizes of the six will be awarded to student entries.
