Design Incubator offers Design Apprenticeship

Every year, Design Incubator offers Design Apprenticeship
to one or two deserving candidates in the field of User Experience Design.

Selection Criteria:

The following types of candidates are preferred over others:

1) Self-taught designers
who want to be in an environment where professional User Experience Design
consulting is delivered methodically

2) Fresh graduates from
Design Institutes who want to make a serious career in User Experience Design

3) Engineering and
Commercial Arts graduates with some work experience seeking Post Graduate
education in User Experience Design, Interaction Design or Graphic Design

Selection is done on the basis of CV, personal
information and interview.

What is offered:

Design Incubator offers driven individuals an opportunity to work and learn
under the guidance of a mentor. This is “Earn and Learn” work position. An
apprentice, by definition, is someone who is new to a profession and is willing
to learn from a “guru”. An apprentice is assigned to work under a senior design
expert, who becomes his mentor. The expert provides the apprentice suitable
training, mentoring, professional work experience, varied work opportunities
and guidance wherever required. The apprentice is expected to assist the mentor
in his work, learn fast, work professionally and show utmost commitments to the
work assigned to him by his mentor.

Duration: A full time 1 year employment programme. This is not an
internship programme that can run parallel to academics and is not run as a
short term / part time programme.

Location of work: Pune, India.

Over the years, several professionals who joined into the Design Apprenticeship
at Design incubator were looking for a “guru” / a mentor and an environment to
learn design in. Some of our past Design employees who grew with the mentoring
in Design Incubator speak about their experience:

Rutuja joined Design Incubator
in 2006:

She joined with a background in software engineering and with a dream to do a
Masters in Design at IDC (IIT).

Today, she is a graduate of IDC and works with a well-known design group.

She says:

“I have always believed that design is not just about solutions; but it’s an
approach that one takes to a problem to reach an optimum solution. Design
Schools teach UCD definitions, methods and all the theory that would help in
practicing Interaction Design; but using "Right Tool/ Method for Right
Problem at Right Time" is what I feel adds value and doesn’t lead to
an "Over Designed" output.

As a Design Apprentice at Design Incubator, I was not
just exposed to some of the tools and methodologies used in User Centered
Design that were later taught to me at IDC; but I also got hands on experience
in learning when should one use which design method. My experience with Design
Incubator has been like a year long "Interaction Design 101" for me.”

Rohit joined Design Incubator in 2007:

He joined with a background in engineering and with a dream to do a Post
Graduation in Graphic Design at NID.

Today, he is about to graduate from NID and is looking forward to his new life
as a Graphic Designer

"Being a s/w engineer, Design Incubator was my first
acquaintance with Design. I learnt the basics of Visual Design (expected to be
known at any Design Institute for Post-Graduation) with focus on Interaction
Design. I got exposure of different phases of a project as well as different
verticals in an organisation during my one year with DI under the mentorship of
Atul Joshi. DI would be a good start point for any person willing to make a
career in Design"
