I started my career late (was a stay at home Mom at first) and I'm now in my late thirties. I have about ten years of work experience - half of it on the technical side in television (was locked into technical work and didn't like it, so left) and the other half in publishing. I have done some great books in publishing but can't singly sustain my growing children on a publishing salary! I'm thus looking to advertising as hopefully eventually, more remunerative and offering a wider latitude of work. I'm looking for some insights on:
1. At my age, and with 10 years of non-advertising experience, but definitely experience in the world of words, writing, and creative work, what is the best I can hope for in an ad agency as a starting salary and starting position?
2. How many years and what qualities needed to start earning in the region of a lakh or more a month, salary wise?
3. Is there age discrimination in this industry? Would I, even at the application stage, be viewed as a loser because I'm pushing forty, have kids and am starting out now?
Appreciate any and all insight on this.

Re: To advertising from publishing?
hello TJS, I think you could get a chance to start work in an agency.
1) the agency that offers you a job will try to match your last salary to begin with
2) consistent good work, endless hours and a few awards will ensure a great salary
3) ideally in this industry age is not a concern but practically people want to hire younger people.

hello TJS, I know people who have earned lakh rupee a month in about three-four years in the business. its not diffuclt. but you WILL have to put in a looot of consistently good work. advertising also is endless hours of work, and a s a mother I dont know if you will be able to take that kind of time out from your children.
have you considered writing content for websites?

i really think there is tremendous scope for growth here in advertising, but it can be taxing sometimes becaue of the odd working hours. would you be ok to that?
