Art students bringing vintage Coca-Cola sign back to life
read teh full article hereArt students at LCHS have been working Wednesday afternoons and some weekends to help revitalize a "ghost sign," located on the side of the Hobby Corner at the intersection of Peachtree Street and School Street.
The idea to give the historic Coca- Cola sign a facelift was originally presented by art teacher Katrina Kelly to LCHS Principal Becky Barden as a service-learning project.
The project gained momentum after Kelly and her students approached members of the community, who were able to provide enough information to allow the group to begin successfully bringing the Lincolnton landmark to life.
In addition to refurbishing the 70- year-old sign, another goal of the project was to motivate the students to get acquainted with the history of the old C.M. May Coca-Cola Bottling Company. During the early part of the 20th Century, the company was situated on the Thomson Highway; by the early 1930s, the plant had relocated to Washington, Georgia. The old building was eventually destroyed, and The Lincoln Center now stands in its place.
The restoration project continues at the Hobby Corner. The painting is being done by students of Katrina Kelly at LCHS. The mural should be completed within the next two or three weeks.
In order to start work on restoring the Coca-Cola mural, the students were required to do a little research on the history of the vintage sign, which is two stories high and about 10 feet wide.
According to Kelly, "The students were given the responsibility of contacting the local public library, Lincolnton City Hall, The Lincoln Jour- nal, and the Lincoln County Historical Society, among others, to locate photographs of what the original sign looked like.
