hey you guys!

well, here's a link for you to download and peruse (there's an ad for niquitin that reads 'the gum that helps put out your addiction.' - that baseline wasn't translated. sorry about the poor scanning...)

http://download.yousendit.com/319D8BFB3A345DB8

the portuguese ad scene... well, we've got lots of good stuff, really, and many talented people. ever since the '90's, lots of brazilian admen migrated to portugal, where not only did they find it easier to make a name than in their brazil (pt population: around 11m) but they also gave a very necessary boost to portuguese creativity, especially when it comes to print layouts and witty type-only ads.

however, and this is universal, i guess, i had the luck to work for some of the largest agencies in the country but that doesn't equal doing the best work. you know, even though there are fewer letters in 'no', it's still easier to say 'yes'. to the client, i mean.

so, if on one hand, i totally understand the anti-scam thing, the truth is that if it weren't for some proactivities, i (and most of my peers) would have a very very boring book. or an even more one, whatever lol. so, you know, if i look at the agency's client list and come up with an idea, why not trying to sell it?

also, sometimes (it did happen to me), the agency just asks for the client's permission to use the logo and air it in a small local paper (you need proof of airing, right?) and then enter it in award shows. eventually, the single became a hit and THEN, the client decided to run it 'properly'. so, you know, there's a bit of a double standard even from the clients' side (again, it depends on the CD and it depends on the client). go figure, huh?

so, if the day-to-day work on hugemothereffing agencies with great clients doesn't meet even the creatives' standards... then, as a plan b for motivation, i don't think it's that bad. this is a very personal opinion. of course, if every person in the milieu thinks the same, all the shows will be scams themselves. and if you show your book to some CD's, one will ask 'did this run? if it didn't why is it here?' and the other goes 'you only have stuff that ran. don't you have anything else, like proactivities or just ads for ads' sake?'. there's really not a standard, you just have to trust your instincts and hope for the best. or hope for your friend's friend's friend put in a good word for you (this one, especially in the account department).

me, i'd just like to consistently 'put good work on the street', as we say in portugal. it's just that you're as good as your last campaign and if the novelty wears out... man... but there are good/tough CD's who CAN handle tough clients and quite good agencies, with CEOs that trust their CD's. the really good ones are few and far between, but they exist.

moneywise... generally, it sucks: a senior art/writer... if they make €2,000 per month (already without the almost 40% tax retained in the source)... they ARE lucky (take, say, 700 for your rent, if you live alone); you CAN get more, but mostly you get less, and it wasn't always like that (my former art made that 7 years ago, for instance). the market's not exactly booming, the political scene is so sad it really makes you laugh and, all in all, it's not a good time right now for the portuguese (says the expat lol - since last december)... still, we do manage to keep the streets and the commercial breaks quite colourful and we do have a sense of humour, even if most marketing directors have not. ;-)

(sorry for the long post, guys)
