By now we all know the infamous McCann sanctuary ad which was disqualified from One Show. The actual story seems like that Uday Parker left McCann Mumbai and joined another agency. Since he was already unhappy with McCann he and his partner Veynz Nayr wrote to several blogs, forums etc about McCann's cheating. I am quoting from one blog:
I got an e-mail from Veynz Nayr today. Veynz is a copywriter in India. He was pretty upset. It seems that in 1997, while working at Everest Advertising, Veynz and his former partner, Uday Parkar, did some work for their client, Matheran Bachao Samiti, an environmental organization.
The following year, the work went on to win a Clio Bronze, New York Fest Gold, was a finalist in Creativity, a London International finalist and won every Indian advertising award worth winning. According to Veynz, it was hailed as a revolutionary piece of work in India and, going by the overwhelming response it garnered, is now a case study.
Imagine Veynz's surprise when he heard that his award-winning work had made it into the 2006 One Show. Well, not exactly. What DID make it into the One Show was a more than reasonable facsimile of the Matheran Bachao Samiti piece. Oh, let's not be kind. It was a pretty flagrant rip-off done by McCann Erickson Mumbai for Sanctuary Asia magazine.
Apparently The Cheating Culture isn't unique to Americans.
What makes this story all the more bizarre is that the work was done pretty much under the nose of Uday Parkar who, until recently, was ECD at McCann Erickson Mumbai. He has since resigned in protest. In addition, the One Club has disqualified the entry and rightfully so.
What's mystifying to me isn't so much that an agency would try to pull something like this. It's happened before and I suppose it will happen again. No, what's really mystifying is that anyone would be so stupid and/or so arrogant enough to think they can actually succeed at this stuff in an age where sleazeball tactics can't help but wind up on blogs like this. It's not worth it.
