To tell you the truth, I must say that I'm 'comfortable' with those -- enough to earn for a living. I will never call myself an expert in HTML or CSS.

This is motivation self-learners need.

It depends on the company and their field (Mobile platforms, Web pages, Application) on whether you need to have programming knowledge or not. The important thing is visualizing workflows, solving problems and usability analysis. If you know HTML, CSS and Photoshop, Dreamweaver, AfterEffects -- you are good to go.

I must say that my skills are self acquired as I didn't have the chance to get a formal education in Interface Design. I mainly did "Watch, Read, Do and Learn." I love it!

Sometimes there are no other ways than self-learning. The first company I joined after my PG, had a very good and experienced UI designer. I learned a lot from him; but one day he suddenly left to greener pastures. It is a strange feeling to do design that nobody reviews. Clients may accept it, but there must be somebody who can introduce a fresh look on things.

Mentors are a must in creative field. Dear reader, If you hold a senior position, kindly take out some time to talk to freshers and interns. This will definitely improve their learning curve and in future they will pass on the kindness.

Some people have all the luck in this world! For others, they have to buy the 'Dummies' series of books to self-learn any software...
