The growth in scale and scope of licensing in the last few years is a sign of its growing significance for business and consumers alike. Small and Medium Enterprises, especially in the kids category, have a lot of opportunity to leverage licensing and we at LIMA India are excited to see their greater participation. Coupled with the growth of the economy, retail and E-commerce, licensing as a industry is definitely on a roll.”
The global licensing industry continues to be on a growth trajectory. India is no exception. The Indian licensing business is worth US$ 1.39billion dollars at retail, as per the Global Licensing Industry Survey 2017 Report, commissioned by the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), testimony to how licensing has now become a major force in India. With its growing economy, greater propensity to buy and high levels of brand awareness, India along with Brazil and China are the three emerging licensing markets in the world, driving growth across categories and genres.

Traditionally, India has been a kids-focused licensing market with a strong legacy in entertainment and character licensing. The licensing market inkids-categories continues to be a stronghold for licensing with Apparel, Toys, Back-To-School as the driver categories. Given the growth in retail across modern trade and E-commerce, and the expansion of genres beyond character licensing such asDigital, Sports, Lifestyle, Publishing, and Corporate Brands, licensing has increased in more categories like Footwear, Home Décor, Publishing, Foods and Beverages, Personal Care, Retail. More and more companies recognize the power of licensing to leverage their businesses.. As the retail industry grows at a staggering 20% rate includingthe rapid expansion and consumer acceptance of E-commerce, licensing is poised to become an even greater force in India in the coming years..
