These are unmatched:

Chelo Kabab from Peter Cat

Karaishutir Kochuri: a seasonal favourite, have it with alur dam.
Luchi: puri and phulkas - no comparison.

And not to be missed in all this,
Pan unmatched, even in Benaras or Lucknow. Honestly!

phuchka. The same thing of course is that it is unheard of in the rest of
the country.
9. Alukabli (Spicy mix of potato, chick pea, tamarind etc) - Another must at Vivekananda Park or opposite Menoka Cinema

Trying to make some sense of the above list and compiling:

What to eat in Kolkata and where:

Kolkata is full of culture. Of all kinds. Art, education, architecture, music, and food. And as with most fast 'developing' cities, many of Kolkata;s iconic eateries and tastes will disappear at the altar of modern kitchens preparing a passionless assembly line run of food. 'Efficient' cooking takes over delicious cooking.

This may not be an exhaustive list to please chip in and add. I found a lot from DesiCreative's thread on 'Advertising Makes Me Hungry'. Rest a lot I have exoperienced myself, having spent two decades in this beautiful city:

- Chelo Kebab at Peter Cat on Park Street (it's a flavoured rice dish with kebabs).
- Flury's on Park Street. Try their menu but do have the Viennese Coffee.
- Anda-Chicken Roll from Kusum on Park Street
- Have a CB Steak at Olypub on Park Street. I dont think anyone else serves it like this.
- A little off Park Street, Little Russell Street Dhaba. Do not miss the Chicken Bharta with Chapatis (I never, ever, as a rule, share my plate). They have a killer green dal as well, and their chai and samosa is stunning.
- On Free School Street, look for Kasturi (somewhere opposite to the erstwhile Jamuna Cinema). Try their food. Its some of the best Bengali food from both east and west Bengal.
- On Free School Street look for Prince. They have some awesome Prawn Bharta.
- At New Market look for an old Jewish Bakery called Nahoum's. They have a killer plum cake.
- Between New Market and Lighthouse Cinema, a man serves amazing Chole Bhature
- In Esplanade, look for Dacre's Lane and there, look for Chitto Baboor Dokan. Try most things there. You could also try bread and chicken stew. Chitto babu has been selling this amazing stuff since 70 years here. The chai is good too. Look for Ghoogni. Its out of this world.
- In lalbazaar, near Poddar Court you will find Tiretta Bazaar. At 6am types, you will find the most authentic Chinese breakfast sold here.
- On College Street look for Coffee House. The coffee is nice, but try the cutlets. Also the float with ice cream.
- Again on College Street look for Putiram for his Chai and pakodas.
- In Zakaria Street look for Aminia. This was their first outlet in 1929 and they are amongs the best.
- Coming towards ballygunge, stop by the Azad Hind Dhaba on Ballygunge Circular Road. Try their Kashmiri Dum Aloo.
- A little further towards Ballygunge on the same Ballygunge Ciurcular Road is Sharma's Dhaba. try the green dal, chicken dishes etc.
- At ballygunge itself is 6 ballygunge Place. The food is very nice. Order whatever suits you, but i am partial to Shukto (mixed vegetables), Shorshe bata fish (your choice of fish in a mustard based gravy), cholar dal, luchi and mutton kosha.
- Near Deshopriyo Park on AJC Bose Road is Maharani Chai. They Chai, Kachori and Gulab Jamun are out of the world.
- In the Gariahat market, look around for a corner shop. Try their fish chop, fish fry, biryani. It will all be very nice.
- On Hindustan park, near Southern Avenue, you have to have the Puchka. Its the bengali version of Gol Gappas.
- In Garihat itself look for Bhojohari Manna. Amazing bengali food.
