ARJUN, I still say Kessel Kramers sucks....

Post by Tarun Biswas »

Ok, i put this as a seperate post because this is a seperate topic.

You mentioned the great work they did for Hans Brinker Budget Hotel...

That's utter crap. Our knowledge is based on what we read in ADVERTISING BOOKS and now I mean ARCHIVE. Where do you think they were advertising? When back packers travel, they just find any cheap hostel, so I do not even see why anyone would come to this place just becoz they did some scam ads?

A simple google search will tell u a lot about thos hotel. It is only 11 room youth hostel...but wait, if you look at tripadvisor.com, here is one guy's reaction: WORST HOSTEL ON EARTH.

This is quite simply the worst hotel on earth.
The inside decor is vile and mouldy. The staff are the most unhelpful I've ever come across. Most girls staying on their own don't feel safe... and the staff aren't willing to help them or move them to another room, so you have to stay in a room with any kind of men (usually who are high). Even though I stayed with 3 other girls and 2 men in one room, none of us girls felt safe.
The cleaner took away my own personal towel - then when I went to ask for a new replacement I was accosted by a member of staff who 'told me off' for taking a new towel. How rude.
You cannot relax in this place and can't enjoy it.
They also have weird jokes om postcards which just aren't funny... like a guy with a black eye saying I enjoyed myself at Hans Brinker. Very bizzarre. Don't stay there.

_____

And another one:

I was very disappointed with the Hans Brinker. I've stayed in budget hotels before, but this was the worst ever. I booked 5 days there and had to leave after 2 because I couldn't take it anymore. If you want to rest, forget it, the hostel is loud 24 hours a day. People yelling inside and outside, doors opening and closing at all hours, and at 10am, check out time, it gets even worse. The breakfast is barely edible. They run out of things quite fast, so you have to beg for more. There is constantly a huge line at the reception, whether for check-in, check-out, asking a question. They seem to be quite understaffed and the reception staff is particularly unfriendly (not all of them). We had a double room, but the sheets seemed to be for a single bed, so you were basically sleeping on the dirty mattress. The sheets and pillows don't seem very clean anyway. Our bathroom was large, but it smelled like a sewer constantly. Staying in the room was like being in a hospital or a prison, I can't quite decide. The hostel is in a great area, but right in front of it, there is loads of trash, even though there are two bins right in front of it! And what's more, the hostel is not even that cheap. It costs 70 euro for 2 people and you can get wonderful hotels, which are also close to everything for 80/90 euro. I must say that it is a party hostel, so for those looking for that, it may be an appropriate hostel. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend it - ever.

______

Another one:

Just returned from my stay at the Hans Brinker hostel, seems I've had it easy in comparison to others. I stayed there with my college so didnt have the problem of staying with strangers. My inital reaction to arriving to the hostel 10.30pm sunday night was 'run-down'. I had imagined it to be posher! But having not stayed at a hostel before I guess I was a bit naive. The shock came when we saw our rooms-PRISON CELL! With just our bunk beds (which dont have ladders or railings) lockers, and railings across the window, we were shocked. However cant complain, we did have our own bathroom! For 'Hans Brinker' novices, the showers are like standing in light rain so might take a while to wash long hair, if youre on the top bunk try to put your mattress on the floor to avoid falling out the bed, and you have to show your key anytime you want to enter the hostel. There is a sign saying that but having not seen it, I just thought it was dodgy automatic door! Get a safe key for downstairs to put important items e.g money and passport. Bring earplugs for sleeping, people are very noisy at night. No matter how late it is! The rest of the hostel is quite good, the bar has interesting drawings on the walls and happy hour is 5-6pm meaning drinks are buy 1 get 1 free. Club has a dancing section with a pole! Breakfast is a bit strange-only the bread, ham and cheese is free! So not very healthy but suppose its what the Dutch do. Over all an alright experience at the Hans Brinker. To UCCA Canterbury students coming here Oct 2007-the hostel is fine if you dont expect luxury. Have fun!

I REST MY CASE...

Although this has got nothing to do with kessels kramer work, dude i can also find some rave reviews on hans brinker on the net. I don't know what it proves as far as the ads are concerned but you asked for it.

II give the Hans Brinker an above average rating for what it is--a hostel. I seriously thought that this would be a place where my friend and I would stow our gear and take shower and ultimately end up sleeping at the airport. But it really wasn't that bad. In fact, not bad at all. I was prepared to see boogers on the wall and blood on the pillowcases....and maybe that did happen for some, but my experience was quite the contrary. The place is easy to find, in a great location near Leidesplein, and is a lot of fun. I thought I was back in college (and for 2 days, that's fun....anymore than that, and true, I might have started to get annoyed!). It was great. We met/made lots of new friends, our roommates were fun, the beer was cheap, and I really enjoyed winding down the night in the lil' nightclub thing downstairs. I mean, c'mon 1 euro 50 for a beer....yep, pretty much drank myself sober on Heineken. It was cheap, fun, relatively clean (a hostel, mind you, filled with inebriated 20-somethings...there is a limit to how clean it could possibly be), and the perfect ending to a my European tour. Honestly, this place was better than the "real" hotel I had in Madrid.
Oh...and a little tidbit....along with some newly made friends, as soon as we got there we went to a great little coffeeshop near the hotel called Rokery. So...go out of the hotel, hang a left, go to the end of the street, hang a left, go up ( I think 2 blocks) and hang a left at the McDonald's, and walk about a block and a half (maybe a little more). Rokery is on the left. The place is awesome. It's a bar with a separate little kiosk for smoking, so that you can drink and smoke and in the same place. Perfect way to start and/or end the evening. Oh....and I HIGHLY recommend Abraxas for shakes and brownies (oh my goodness...brownies are so good!). Anyhoo...stay at the Hans Brinker. Know that it's a hostel going in, and if, and I hate to say this, but will anyway....if you're over 30 (unless you're extremely tolerant or young at heart) I wouldn't necessarily think this would be the right place for you. Other than that....yeah Hans Brinker!!!

Hans Brinker is a really fun hostel with a pretty decent club downstairs that could be a lot of fun if it were busy. It's in a great location for night life, it's just a bit of a trek to the train station! The beds were clean, so were the bathrooms, the staff were friendly, and breakfast was really good! Definitely recommend staying there!

Comment by Jen August 2006

They cleaned the rooms every day, the atmosphere and location were great, and breakfast was decent.

Comment by Lilo Hapuka August 2006

the room smelt like weed (but where doesnt). the room was small, considering we had six chicks staying there. but come on, the hostel is right smack bang in the centre of all the action, clearly a place for young (or old) party goers! definitely a great cheap place to stay. friendly staff. and a pretty cool bar for pre-drinks, before stumbling outside into the amazing night life.

Comment by 2mas July 2006

Great hotel with a great staff. Loved the backyard where you can smoke and drink until nine p.m. and meet other nice people. Close to centrum and trams, and with an excellent restaurant, club, and shopping area just to the south. Nice coffeeshops nearby. Highly recommended!

Comment by Dave (u.k) July 2006

ive just got back from another weekend at hans brinker. though i agree about the rooms not being great, it is the whole experience that matters. i just shared a room with three australians (two girls and one guy) who were excellent, very friendly, and made my whole stay there great. i wish it were that good everytime.

Comment by Ozrics June 2006

Stayed there june 14th to 15th. Opened the room door and thought i was in prison. The rooms are really basic but seem clean for what you pay. The Bar and nightlife of the hotel was ace -- the downstairs bar is open till around three a.m. and is very cheap. When comming back for the night get yourself down and get some beer which is promised to get you a good sleep and make you totally not care where you sleep.

Comment by joanne watson April 2006

i am a coach driver and have stayed in five-star hotels all over the world but stay in the hans brinker loads throughout the year with work. if its good enough for me its good enough for any of my drivers. clean and comfortable the only draw back is its sometimes noisy at night you cant shut a door quietly in there. the grumpy person shouting out the door is probably me or my hubby who are usually driving a long way back to the U.K. next morning. as for the lager i usually end up in bed early after happy hour lol. but its great fun to be there.

This is absolutely awesome! I did an interrail with a friend and we arrived at Amsterdam with no place to stay in August 2004, a pretty busy season. We walked for more than one hour with hour backpacks weighting about 15kg. First we went to the stay ok, but as it was full they told us about this freakin' place and so we went. When we arrived there, there was a bunch of people, around 20 maybe in the reception and on the street as the reception was completely full. We got our rooms, mixed rooms which was great as we met many different guys and girls and here is a special mention to the australian girl and to Sua, the south korean girl who were both very kind and funny. Awsome times, great laughs we spend there! Highly recommended if you want to rock and have fun!

It has downfalls, that's for sure. But it is also a great place to meet people, with a busy (and cheap!) bar, and there are far better things to do in Amsterdam than sit in your room. Pros — Good included breakfast with cold meats, cheese, and variety of breads and cereal. Pay extra for eggs and fruit. — Each dorm of six beds has an en suite, although the showers can be a little weak and dodgy. — Good lockers in the rooms. — Busy bar with excellent drink specials and lots of people to meet. — Attracts a friendly, outgoing crowd. Cons — I didn't see my room get cleaned once in two weeks. And I spent four days without leaving bed while I had flu. — Rooms are a cramped, a bit shabby, and smoking is allowed (never cool for the non-smokers). — Some of the staff are great, but several seem to be there to make life difficult.

I've been to Amsterdam twice in the span of two months and stayed at five different hostels. This is definitely by far my favorite. It's cheap, very central and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The bar in the basement is a plus and the staff are generally friendly and helpful. I would recommend it to anyone, especially if you were looking for a relaxed fun place to meet other people and sleep for cheap. Just beware of the wide-eyed massive school groups!! There are good coffee shops right down the street and an excellent Mexican restaurant on the same street as well. (I can judge because I'm Mexican myself!). Enjoy your time in Amsterdam and remember to chill out. That's what the city is all about.

And yes Tarun, this is exactly what kessels kramer work says. If you need more reviews i can surely post them here, although i know it's a waste of space. And if you want to say all the best creative juries out there are stoopid...well I TOO REST MY CASE.

Arjun,

You are such a loser.

All I am saying is that KK never built the brand. Youth hostels run inspite of advertising. Just google youth hostels and you find good and bad reviews for every single yough hostel. The point i am making is that KK's claim to building the buget hotel ito super brand is false. First of all where did they run these ads? when ANYONE is choosing a youth hostel they go online and then you will find HAZAR hostels and you pick one that is cheap and AVAILABLE. you do not get picky and choosy when it comes to youth hostel as all you want is a bed to sleep.

And you just proved my point. which review mentioned it's advertising?

Come on now do not worship the awards jury, we all know they are bunch of self proclaimed eco centrics.

Do you really believe that each and every ad that wins in Cannes is worth it, and each and every ad that is not winning is not better .....

Grow up dude.

Hey TB,

Lets not get personal about this. I mean come on 'why call me a loser'. We may differ on views, but why the hell get personal. Dude lets shake hands and make up...this is certainly not a fight.

Firstly you were the one to upload the bad reviews by travellers before me. For what? Only you know. What did it have to do with the advertising.

Look no one new HBB before. Did you? Now you know. Definitely they ran the ads...and for a sustained period for over two years in most of Europe. They never wanted to build it to a super brand. They potrayed HBB as it is...never hyped it up. Only the advertising made it look like an interesting place to stay.

There are hundreds of advertising reviews definitely which mention the KK advertising. And mostly great reviews by great people.

Please also check out what they have done for diesel.

As for award juries to call them ego-centrics (thats what you meant i guess), well there are some, but you can't tell that about every cookie in the jar. Don't tell me you don't go thru a One show or watch a cannes showreel. Sometimes the best doesn't win..i agree, but the ones who do are also worth a treat. And we value the decisions. Arn't we all saying JWT is suddenly hot now. And you gotta agree they have done some superlative stuff.

ok, i should not call u a loser.

but do u seriously believe that they ran those ads all over europe? that kind of media spending is for Nike and Adidas and not an 11 room hostel. and if they did then in what kind of media?

and about the hostel getting famous, dude it is famous only in advertising circles.

and now JWT india. u say it is suddenly hot. hot for what? those levis scam ads? has any consumer seen those ads? did u see those ads before they won?

Tarun, I am amazed at your arrogance. If you are better then the cannes jury then perhaps you should not be in Orrisa but in some hot agency in atleast an Indian metropolis.

Ok Tb,

I was a bit busy so could't reply. Well to run it over europe doesn't always mean spending big bucks. HBB had posters, web ads, pullouts in travel mags, panels in euro rail etc.

And you have started a different argument already. To scam or not to scam.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Me and my partner visited KesselsKramer in Amsterdam May 2006.
We met Dave and Eric, the CD's over there.
I must tell you that KK is probably one of the best agencies in the world and in regards to their work, most of it is every agencies dream ... If you didn't know this already.

Anyone working as a creative should check there recent publication 2 Kilo.
They are seriously different and the working environment is something special. I know a few guys that have worked at KK and they share my views.

Care for now,

D

Tarun,

I don't care if KK does great work that works or scam ads that scam.

I don't care if the advertising for Hans Brinker lied about the hotel or Hans Brinker was a great experience even for someone who didn't know or see KK's advertising.

All I know is that by picking up this ridiculous argument (backed by even more ridiculous 'proof'), keeping at it like a dog scraping after a last piece of dried skin on a dried dog bone, accusing Arjun of being a loser despite him providing enough logical arguments (and having a 'right' to like KK's work) you have made KK even more famous...many desis may haven't even heard or seen KK's work...and now they have...

Either, like the others have mentioned, you have been rejected half a million times by KK. Or maybe you are actually a KK creative in disguise operating under a pseudonym from Orissa, purposely rabble-rousing in order to get more eyeballs for KK.

Whatever it is, it is getting pretty tiresome for me (and I guess everyone else) to see you fighting like a small kid over a neighbour's lollipop.

Two options for you, my sulking, easily irritated, flog a dead horse subject, friend...get a job in KK and discover whether the place is good enough to meet your exacting standards. Or just take a nice long vacation at Hans Brinker.

Better still, get a life.
