Tata, Bye Bye, See you
Hi everyone,
I've been a part of the advertising fraternity for close to a year. I've worked as a writer at Ambience Publicis and BEI Confluence. I've built a decent portfolio and got some releases too. But while sitting back and relaxing one sunny morning, I realised that something felt wrong. Let me take a reality check. Here I am, all of 23 years old, with a BMM and MBA degree to boot. I put in endless nights of work, sometimes doing even studio cut-paste jobs on my layouts. And I'm earning a paltry 9k a month. While friends are earning in the ballpark of 30k. Inane friends.
And I realised that in order to support my family and secure my future, in order to lead a reasonably confortable life, I have to earn better. I've got loans to pay off, and here I can barely sustain myself. So, it's adieu to my favourite field. I'm off to chasing greener pastures. Maybe my dreams can wait. Maybe I can come back some other day. Just maybe.
Sunny mornings can really be something.

Hi Ganpathy,
sorry to see you leaving advertising, but hey man, you are only 23, when i started i was making only 1000 Rs a month 15 years back in Kolkatta.
Piyush is making over 3-4 crores, what even an MNC would not pay. But then again money is good in any field if you are good.
If you are average in advertising the most you can reach is become a CD and make a lac or 2, and that's it...so good luck...

hi ganpathy
according to me, two things r for sure.
one is, advertising either gets u or it doesn't. if u were meant for it and vice versa nothing on earth could have made u leave. and if u were not, then nothing could hold u back.
two is, it definitely makes much more sense to do anything other than mainstream advertising nowadays. u get paid much much much more. and money sure does matter.
wish i could leave advertising too. i know i would earn so much much more. but i'm stuck with this. it's like a bad habit.
any way, way to ganpathy. all the very best for whatever u choose to do.

kikikikikiki is right. advertising is a habit. you have to get used to the life and the bad pay and long hours... especially if you are creative, since there is little else you can do. servicing people can always join the clients' side and keep growing, unlike creatives, whose career seems to plateau after becoming a cd.

when they asked neil french in 1975 or i think in 1980 (or long long ago) where do you see yourself after 25 years, he said still in Advertising. If you talk to an IT guy he would complain, in banking they would complain, if you have a decent MBA, you will still complain as there are people with IIM MBA's, so my friends the GRASS IS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE.
I am really sick of all you saying advertising sucks...the very fact that you guys are out here on this forum says a lot....freaking losers....

i think everyone thinks we are in a cool profession and man an average advertising creative makes more money then average in any profession, even a doc.
and guess what there is endless possibilty to freelance, be a consultant, work from home, mingle with top celebs, party at cannes, miami and shoot a commercial at exotic location, what else you want?
an average mba would work long hours as well, and then you will always have to prove for a promotion, and unlike advertising there is no scope for 'scams'. so guys, do not look at harvard grads and think that advertising pays less, because for every harvard grad, there are all those highly paid advertising professionals as well.
and then you can become a director, a photographer, event marketer, interior decorator etc.
i doubt if any other profession offers u all this. and do not forget the casual clothing...try wearing a neck tie 5 days a week....

ya it's an addiction
Every kind of addiction is bad. Advertising IS an addiction with creative people and they have to pay for it. for some it is a steroid which takes you to great heights, but ultimately they all pay very drearly for it. As v. mahesh would be realising in heaven. let's fight this addiction. say yes to life. no to advertising.
