The devil and the 'broken TV' is a part of my childhood memory (1987). When the ONIDA TVC was being played, I routinely made an action of throwing a stone or a cricket ball at our PHILIPS 14" Black & White TV just as the visual changes to the breaking of the TV screen (Voice-over: 'Neighbour's envy, owner's pride').
A small internet search resulted in the following trivia.
The Devil was originally created by Mr gopi Kukde of 'Avenues' in 1982.

The first devil was acted out by David Whitbread who was a model coordinator and production stylist. He played devil for 14 years.
His words about the only time he became the model: ‘‘I enjoyed playing the devil—wore big ears, with a big sponge tail out of my shots, shaved off my eyebrows, wore a skull cap and did it for 14 years,’’ he explains. ‘‘Though I hated modelling, because I’m so short, and the make-up was a torturous, elaborate one that took three hours!’’

Rajesh Khera as the Devil (Sep-2004) during the great come-back; Agency: Rediffusion
His words: ‘‘The new image was obviously meant to inject gusto and the Keanu Reeves look hopes to do just that.’’
